just in case anyone missed this in the news or maybe not in the loop, Disney is currently refusing to meet with or acknowledge the newly formed animation production workers union that just voted to join IASTE and become an official part of TAG, the animators and animation artists guild

production workers across all studios are currently voting to be recognized for their hard work and invaluable skill at keeping these productions running, but studios are refusing to meet with them to let them negotiate deals or even exist

as someone who works in animation as a designer i know i wouldn’t be able to do my job at all without any of my production workers. they are the incredibly hard working people who oversee pretty much everything in animation. they make sure everything is running on time, that schedules are being followed, they have to know pretty much every single word of the scripts and beats from the storyboards to make sure nothing is missed, and most importantly, they make sure artists are being taken care of and not overworked. they really are the unsung heroes of the animation world

production workers are also by far the most exploited workers in animation currently. they make about a fraction of what artists make for just as much work put in, and currently have no agreement for health coverage or other benefits that artists protected by the union are guaranteed

BUT! there is some good news. right now there’s a petition on IATSE’s website that has over 80,000 signatures currently addressed to disney leadership to do the right thing and meet with this new union and recognized their vote to form. it still needs roughly 21,000 signatures and only takes a minute to sign! anyone with a zip or postal code can sign, meaning both US and Canadian residents can sign and help this union get the deal it deserves!!

i was able to sign from Germany so international zip codes also seem to work!

good news!

they passed their initial goal of 80k signatures and are well on their way to their new goal!

I was debating pre- and post- smartphone existentialism with an older gentleman today and he stopped part way through and said “Why are you a security guard? Why aren’t you teaching this at some college somewhere?” And I didn’t know what to say so I went with “Well I used to make art but nobody pays an artist”

I want to invoke thought and wonder and introspection and encourage the passions of every soul I meet forever and ever and dig until I find the glorious potential for creation and experience and joy in every single one but unfortunately I must pay rent and so I stand, a meat shield, an NPC with unlockable dialogue

With NASA announcing their streaming service NASA+ and also announcing it’s going to be free and also ad free, I’d just like to appreciate the lengths they go to make scientific knowledge and exploration as available as they possibly can.

There’s more info at this link. Gosh I’m excited about this.

Do you write music with the view of being politically active and delivering a message or does it just happen and the rest follows?

#this is a perspective I’ve only seen from people who truly think broadly and sympathetically about life#like he’s literally right I’m sorry and people who aren’t white or cis or straight learn so so SO early that your existence is political#not inherently but because white cishet men have crafted society in a way it’s impossible for it not to be#and ignoring that isn’t going to make you ascend above it god I’m so tired of having to explain that to people#I’m tired of people’s experiences in both places of privilege and place of oppression being used to scapegoat what we all can see#like look at his example!#‘going out for a dance on a Saturday night’ means something different if you’re poor if you’re gay if you’re a racial minority#’walking into a shop’ who owns it how often do you go is it a big box store or a small owned business is it walkable#there’s pOLitiCs in all of that! in ever aspect of your life!#ESPECIALLY if you take your life experiences and turn them into art of any form (via @twentyfour-mp3)

Friendly reminder that Hozier’s first music video, in 2013, involved him literally taking his life savings and using it to make a protest video about anti-gay actions in Chechnya. This was not a popular position at the time, to the point that damn near every interviewer asked “so, are you gay?” because they literally could not figure out why he cared so much.

Incidentally, after the first few times of saying “no, I’m straight but it’s important,” he started saying “you can think that if you want.” ALSO not a popular position at the time. Adam Lambert’s entire career had been derailed only four years before because he dared to be openly gay and sexual about it.

He literally came out swinging like Muhammad Ali and has not stopped. And he finds it odd that people find it odd! Like he was asked if he was aware of his “lesbian cult following” and seemed genuinely puzzled why he has a lesbian cult following (and, later, just a massive queer following in general) and it’s like. Honey. You loved us first. You loved us more and harder than most people were willing to. When it was unpopular to even whisper about how maybe queer people shouldn’t be seen as inhuman actually, you grabbed a megaphone and screamed. You risked not just losing a career, but never having one at all, to stand by us. You loved us. We’re just loving you back.

Meta: Root’s message for Shaw

In 4x05, Root says, “if the worst comes to pass, if you could give Shaw a message?” when she believes she will die in the fight against Martine. Although we don’t hear the exact wording of this message, the context and Finch’s reply of “I think she already knows”, tell us it is a declaration of love.

Then in 5x13 when the Machine is fading, She tells Shaw, “There’s something I think Root had wanted to say to you. You always thought there was something wrong with you because you don’t feel things the way other people do. But she always felt that was what made you beautiful. She wanted you to know that if you were a shape, you were a straight line. An arrow."

During their time together, Root’s flirting consists of exaggerated innuendo to push Shaw’s buttons ("I’ll do yours if you do mine” in 3x23, “I love it when you play doctor” in 3x17), and in return Shaw pushes Root’s buttons by aggressively pretending she doesn’t care about Root (“I missed you like I’d miss an intestinal parasite” in 3x20, “I wouldn’t want anything to happen…to the dog” in 4x10). Root never disrupts the delicate balance of this dance, never asks Shaw for more than she’s willing to give or demands any confirmation of her feelings, beyond light teasing such as “and is that why you came to see me?” in 4x07.

But in the event of her death, she wants Shaw to know the true extent of her feelings. Given that she always intended it to be this way, this means the message isn’t for her benefit - it’s for Shaw’s. She wants Shaw to know beyond a shadow of doubt that Root loved and understood her for exactly who she is, and has no expectations for what her grieving process should look like. She doesn’t want Shaw to ever feel like she isn’t enough.

A variation of this also appears in 4x11. In one of the Machine’s simulations, Root calls Shaw while knowing she doesn’t have long left and it is the only time we see her push for any sort of confirmation about their relationship. She says, “Why are you so afraid to talk about your feelings? […] We’re perfect for each other. You’re gonna figure that out someday.” and is elated with Shaw’s reply that “maybe someday […] we can talk about it.”

Since the Machine is able to accurately predict Her assets and knows Root’s final request well enough to carry it out in 5x13, She knows this is the one situation where Root would push the issue enough to make it clear that she loves Shaw and that she would be thrilled with any degree of confirmation Shaw chooses to give.

Their conversation in the real timeline begins in exactly the same way, with Root in a dire situation calling Shaw to say, “Hey, sweetie. You busy?”. Shaw replies, “A little. Skip the verbal foreplay, Root. Why are you calling?” and Root says, “Can’t a couple of gals take a little break from work to catch up?”. However, at this point Shaw arrives in the stock exchange and the team’s chance of survival increases considerably.

The rest of their conversation plays out similarly, but is toned down. Root says, “We’re so good at this together. You’re gonna realize that someday.” Where the simulation began with Root asking a direct question about Shaw’s feelings, this is an open statement that doesn’t put any pressure on Shaw to respond.

Shaw replies, “Root, no offense. You’re hot, you’re good with a gun. Those are two qualities I greatly admire. But you and me together would be like a four-alarm fire in an oil refinery.” Just like how Root in the simulation was happy with Shaw’s response, she cheerily replies, “Sounds cozy.” Since at this moment her life is no longer in immediate danger, she doesn’t feel the need to say anything further.

Filed under yes to all of this however it is too early for me to be having these feelings!!! I miss them and this show so much root x shaw poi
